Is 60 the New 40? Or Is It Time to Redefine Ageing on Our Terms?
Interesting question and one that keeps popping up in a wide variety of magazine articles. I keep asking myself what’s wrong with being in your 60’s and why does it have the be the new 40’s? Why can’t I just enjoy my age now? We are living in a time when us older people are embracing our age more and more. We are bombarded with age related marketing that continues to focus on looking younger with a wide variety of potions and procedures that offer us eternal youth.
Decades ago, being in your 60’s meant being seen as old, you’d be retired, drawing your pension looking after the Grandkids and spending days knitting, volunteering or just vanishing. It signified old age too so many. The over 60’s became invisible on our tv screens, we were being advertised walk in bathing aids, incontinence pads, funeral plans and pre-packed microwave meals delivered to our doors. Maybe, just maybe we are still being advertised those things alongside health insurance, cruises and solo holidays.
But have things really changed? Well yes, they have especially as us baby boomers or generation x. We don’t retire early, we have bags of energy and look after ourselves better because we’ve had so many opportunities over the last few decades.
In a few months I reach 64 and The Beatles song has been running through my mind a little too often “will you still need me ……. When I’m 64” For me I am embracing a new age and new beginnings as I launched my new Health Coaching Consultancy. I spent the last 12 months learning new skills and obtaining a Diploma in Health Coaching alongside learning new AI & IT skills including Canva to create beautiful materials to support my business.
It was more than just learning it was also doing, I embraced the changes I needed to make, I exercised more, I ate a well-balanced diet of fresh nutritious foods and I spent real quality time on my self-care and mindset. I lost over 1:5 stone (nearly 9kg) and my energy levels increased alongside reduced pain in my knee and ankles.
Am I a trailblazer? Maybe, after all I could have sat back and just faded away. A recent study showed that the age at which people perceive themselves as ‘old’ is moving upwards; especially as many of us will make the magic 100. Lots of us will live a healthy life well into our 80’s if not beyond and that was why I decided to become a Health Coach focusing on the over 50’s with Golden Years Coaching. I offer a wide variety of programmes with a 4-week quick start to regaining your energy through to 12-week package that works with you across your health goals.
October will see a 30-day Movement Challenge with consistency being at the heart of the message. Getting older has given me a strong desire to get the most out of life and to ensure I continue to lead a healthy life as I age well. A recent article in the Platinum Magazine gave a few top tips to being ‘Older & Happier’ these included spending time with friends and family, joining social activities, prioritising hobbies and remaining active within your local community. I would add staying active, moving daily and eating healthy nourishing real food each day to their list.
As I age well and embrace my wisdom, I don’t need to feel my sixties are the new forties I just need to enjoy each day with love, joy and gratitude as many didn’t make this magic age. So, lets all enjoy being the age we currently are privledged to be.
